Dr Aftab Bhatti has published over 40 peer reviewed publications and his area of research interest includes kidney and prostate cancer. the area of his interest includes active surveillance for the low risk prostate cancer, surgical anatomy of prostate, refinements to surgical techniques for robotic assisted radical prostatectomy and surgical outcomes of the high risk prostate cancer and prognostic markers for the kidney cancer.


Ali Thwaini

Dr Thwaini is a Best Urologist in Dubai with specialist interest in urological cancers, namely in renal cancers. He was the lead for renal cancers in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust (Belfast City Hospital). His main skills are in advanced laparoscopy and renal cancer and renal reconstruction procedures. Dr Thwaini is also an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Queens University, Belfast. He is known for his academic contributions throughout his career with over 40 Medline publications in the field.

After graduating from medical school, Baghdad University in 1994, Dr Thwaini relocated to Jordan where he started his career in Urology at the Royal Medical Services, which is a national tertiary referral center. He acquired FRCS (Ireland) in 1999 and the Jordanian Board in Urology in 2000.

He then moved to Abu Dhabi where he worked for three years as a specialist at SKMC. He acquired the Arab Board in Urology in 2001.

In 2004 he moved to the UK, where he finished his MD degree from Queen Mary University of London. His thesis was on prostate cancer. In 2007 he entered the UK national higher training scheme in urology. This took place in Northern Ireland, where he worked in Belfast City Hospital, Altnagelvin Hospital and Craigavon Hospital, working with regional and national experts in the field. During his training, Dr Thwaini developed specialist interest in urological cancers. He completed his training in 2012 by acquiring the Intercollegiate Specialty Board Certificate in Urology (FRCS-Urology) and he acquired the CCT UK-wide accreditation.

Dr Ansari has been a principal investigator for several international clinical trials and has authored several peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters. Dr de la Rosette is Professor of Urology, at Istanbul Medipol Mega University Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey since 2018. Upon completion of his medical degree and urology residency at St Radboud University Hospital in Nijmegen, the Netherlands he worked there as urologists from 1992 – 2002. He was appointed Professor and Chair at the department of urology at Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam, the Netherlands from 2002-2020. His main fields of interest are minimal invasive surgery and endourology with a special focus on ablative treatments and urological ultrasound.  He is founding co-chairman of the EAU Section of Uro-Technology (ESUT) and the founding chairman of the European Association of Urology (EAU) working party on BPH guidelines. He served as board member of the Society of Endourology during 1996-2016. He is strongly committed to research and is the founding-chair of the CROES (Clinical Research Office of the Endourology Society). He holds since 2016 the position of General Secretary of the Societe International d’Urologie. Dr de la Rosette is (co)author of over 700 peer-reviewed publications and has authored many book chapters.

Dr Makarand Khochikar qualified as a surgeon in 1988 (Miraj), completed his residency in urology in 1992 (Mumbai) and then had further training in urology, urologic oncology at Bedford and Addenbrooke’s hospital, Cambridge (UK) from 1993-1998.He returned to India in 1998 to establish a state of the art Uro-oncology unit at Siddhi Vinayak Ganapati Cancer Hospital, Miraj. This department undertakes large amount of uro-oncological work and has made its presence felt nationally and internationally.

Dr Khochikar has won many awards. Dr Kirpekar award and Gold Medal for standing first in university in Master of Surgery exam in1988, Schering Prize and a Gold medal for standing first at University of London in Dip.Urol exam in 1991, Vijayawada Best poster award and Brijkishor Patana best paper award are some of them. Recently he was awarded the highest honor of urological society of India (West Zone) – The Urology Gold Medal in 2010. Recipient of Gold Medal and SLAUS oration by Sri Lanka Urology Association in 2011. In year 2012- he was awarded yet another prestigious award – Pinamaneni Oration and Gold medal by USI for his life time work on adrenal tumors mainly pheochromocytoma. He has one of the largest individual series on adrenal tumors in India. He was awarded the best reviewer’s award – special appreciation by Indian Journal of Urology for 2015, BJUI Winter Reviewer award 2019.

He has produced many high quality original publications; review articles in peer reviewed national and international journals and contributed in book chapters.

Has been invited as a national and international faculty to many centers, has conducted large number of symposia, operative demonstrations and delivered guest lecturers across the globe. Teaching has been very close to his heart, has been conducting teaching courses on Uro-oncology since last 15 years, a weeklong crash course on Uro-oncology conducted annually at Muljibhai Patel urological hospital, Nadiyad and JPAC is the most popular course in urology in India.

He has conducted teaching courses for Asian School of Urology and SUA at Singapore, BAUS and ASU at Bangladesh, European School of Urology and ASU at Hong Kong, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. He has been part of AUA -USI instructional courses in India and has conducted instructional courses at SIU annual meetings. Recently he conducted a three day course on Uro-oncology at Nadiyad which was webcasted by SIU academy.

Has been invited as a guest speaker for many international meetings ( AUA ,SIU , EAU,WPCC , WUOF , BAUS ) and by international societies in Asia ( India , Sri Lanka , Bangladesh, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, China, Philippines, Myanmar), Japan ,Australia, UK , Germany, Italy , France, Spain , Greece ,Middle East ,UAE ,Egypt ,USA and Canada in last twenty years.

He was the core member of the Guidelines committee that designed Indian Bladder Cancer Guidelines for Urological society of India. He was the member of the Indian panel that recommended amendments in TNM classification system for urological cancers in 2004. He was on the panel for the Melbourne Prostate Cancer statement, at WPCC meeting in Australia in 2014.

He Was invited as an examiner for exit exam in urology at Singapore and for P hD at Pravara University, Pravaranagar (India)

Dr Khochikar was a member of the ICUD (International Consultation on Urologic Diseases) consultation panel for upper tract TCC supported by SIU and is also currently involved in preparing ICUD –SIU guidelines on bladder cancer.

Dr Khochikar served on editorial board of Indian Journal of Urology (2000-2009), Current Urology Reports, and peer reviewer for BJUI, Journal of Urology, Indian Journal of surgery, Indian Journal of cancer, Urology Annals, International Journal of Urology, Journal of Clinical Urology and many others. He has served as a guest editor of the special issue of IJU on hormone refractory prostate cancer. He did undertake the course for the reviewers by Journal of Urology.

He has served as a council member of Urological society of India (USI), USI-West Zone, was a core member of education cell of USI and has served as a convener of research cell of USI. He was the convener of the section of uro-oncology for the USI (2003-2007)

He is currently National delegate for the Indian section of SIU, has served as Deputy National Delegate from 2013-2015.He has been appointed as Board of Directors of SIU in Oct 2016.

He is currently President of the Urological society of India –West zone.

Currently he is the Chairman of the Department of Uro-oncology at Siddhi Vinayak Ganapati Cancer Hospital, Miraj and is also a member of the management committee and Governing council of the hospital.

In 1987 he went back to Toronto as staff at Toronto general hospital and stayed till 1993 when he returned to the American University of Beirut Medical Center Division of Urology.

Doctor Pilar Laguna qualified in medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, in 1979. Following completion of her training as urologist she joined the medical staff at Hospital del Sagrado Corazon and later Fundacion Puigvert in Barcelona. She was appointed chairman at the Hospital Gral La Mancha Centro in Alcazar de San Juan in 1995 and moved in 2000 to the Netherlands. At present she holds the position of Professor in Urological Oncology at Istanbul Medipol University, Istanbul (Turkey) and Professor in Urological Oncology Amsterdam UMC University Hospital, Amsterdam (the Netherlands).

Doctor Pilar Laguna is chairman of the EAU guidelines committee on testicular cancer. She is past chairperson of the Ablative working party of the EAU Section of Uro-Technology (ESUT). Her main interest is Renal Cancer, and she is one of the pioneers of developing programs on renal cryosurgery in Europe. She has been appointed chairperson of the Renal Mass study that is conducted by the Clinical Research Office of the Endourological Society (CROES). Since 2019 she a BOD member of the Société International d’Urologie (SIU) and holds the position of Chair of the SIU Scholarship Office.

Doctor Pilar Laguna has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles in the field of urology, with special focus on minimally invasive therapy, oncological urology and endourology. She is co-editor of a book on testicular cancer and has published over 20 book-chapters.

Dr. Raed A. Azhar is the president of the Saudi urological association. He is an associate professor at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He completed his Urology residency training at McGill University in Canada. He is double board certified from Canada and USA. He pursued fellowship training in Advanced Robotics and Laparoscopy at USC Institute of Urology, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California under the direction of Dr.Inderbir Gill, the world leader in minimally invasive urological surgery. He was actively involved with the USC team in the development of innovative techniques in Robotic Urologic surgery.. He then arrived back on faculty at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia while still serving as an adjunct clinical associate professor of Urology at USC Institute of Urology.

He is considered one of the leaders of robotic urologic surgery in Saudi Arabia and in the Middle East. He has helped developing robotic surgery programs in this part of the world. He has also received several acclaimed awards including scholarship awards, outstanding resident teacher awards as well as several awards for his scientific presentations and surgical videos at scientific meetings. He has presented many abstracts at scientific meetings and has authored several peer-reviewed articles, reviews, and chapters. He is a reviewer for several urology journals.

He completed his residency in Urology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, New York, US. He then completed his fellowship in Urologic Oncology and Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, New York, US.

He has authored numerous research articles in leading peer-reviewed journals, as well as book chapters and videos. He is an editorial reviewer for numerous scientific journals and a member of several urological and oncologic societies, including the Society of Urologic Oncologists, the European Association of Urology and Alpha Omega Alpha. He is currently the Chairperson of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s (NCCN) Middle East and North Africa Panel for the Modification of Prostate Cancer Guidelines. Dr. Hassen has lectured in and chaired numerous scientific meetings and also serves as an international faculty member for the American Urological Association.

He specializes in Urologic Oncology and Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery. Dr. Hassen is one of a handful of Urologists worldwide who is formally trained in both urologic oncology and minimally invasive surgery.
